Catch Live Worship, Classic Hymns at General Convention
By From Staff Reports
Diocesan Office, Parrish
INDIANAPOLIS - One of the highlights of General Convention is the daily Holy Eucharist held in the ballroom of the J.W. Marriott.
Here, North Carolina Bishop Michael Curry preaching during the July 7 General Convention Eucharist. His sermon was entitled "We Need Some Crazy Christians."
The text is HERE.
The services are a mix of mostly classic hymns from the 1982 Hymnal as well as a sampling of alternative hymns from collections such as A Mass for a Soulful People. The music reflects each day's focus; gathering music one day came from the Steel Band Orchestra of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. The classic hymns are some of the best known, including In Christ There Is No East or West (529), Praise to the Lord the Almighty (390) and Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee (376).
Each day honors a different person from Holy Women, Holy Men, including author Harriet Beecher Stowe, Czech priest John Hus and social reformers Walter Rauschenbush, Washington Gladden and Jacob Riis.
The liturgy is typically done in two or more languages, including a Spanish Alleluia and Verse before the Gospel reading. Particularly effective was the use of a Hmong language Lord's Prayer in the Friday, July 6 service. (The Episcopal Church has a Hmong congregation in St. Paul, Minnesota.)
