Tampa Deanery Churches

The 17 Episcopal churches of the Tampa Deanery range from Brooksville to the North, Plant City to the East, and Sun City Center to the South.

The first service was held in Tampa in 1868 when the Rt. Rev. John Freeman Young heard that there were two Episcopalians stationed at Ft. Brooke. This missionary effort grew to be St. Andrew’s, Tampa’s First Episcopal Church. St. Andrews’ then founded St. James as a black congregation and the House of Prayer in the Tampa Heights area. Those two congregations merged in recent years to become St. James House of Prayer.

The rapid growth of Tampa led to the founding of St. John’s and St. Mary’s, and churches in the surrounding communities including St. John’s, Brooksville; St. Mary’s, Dade City; and St. Peter, Plant City.

At University of South Florida, the St. Anselm's Episcopal Chapel Center has a 60-year tradition of ministering to students at USF. Missionary efforts began in 2019 at the new Wesley Chapel Episcopal Church.

Tampa is blessed with diverse people from many backgrounds, and this is reflected in the character of our congregations. We bring together people from all over the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, South America, Canada, and Asia. A visit to any of the Tampa Episcopal churches will illuminate the cultures and the fellowship in their worship.
