Notes and News from Bishop Smith
As I travel the diocese each week, I experience the power of Christ working through his people from Naples to Brooksville and inland to Arcadia. It's their hands, heads and hearts that are accomplishing the church's mission--in their hometowns and also in the Dominican Republic through missions with our Companion Diocese.
Here, a quick sampling of images of my experiences and the people I meet as we spread the Gospel and serve as examples of Christ in action; on the "Recent News from Bishop Smith" column at right are some news items relating to my work in the Diocese.
At Lambeth Palace

Here, a view of the Houses of Parliament and Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben), across the Thames River from just in front of London's Lambeth Palace.
In January 2013, I was in the U.K. for meetings at Lambeth Palace, which is the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Anglican Communion.
Convention Addresses

Here are recent Bishop's Annual Diocesan Convention Addresses, to review where our diocese has come from, and where we are going.
Five Florida Bishops Gather
At right, the Florida Bishops gather at the Province IV meeting in Savannah Oct. 23-25, 2012.
From left, the Rt. Rev. Samuel Johnson Howard (Florida), our Rt. Rev. Dabney Smith, Rt. Rev. Philip Duncan (Central Gulf Coast), the Rt. Rev. Greg Brewer (Central Florida) and the Rt. Rev. Leopold Frade (Southeast Florida).
A 50th Anniversary Celebration
I had the pleasure of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Consecration of the Church of St Anselm's in Lehigh Acres on October 29, 2011. We gathered with the Vicar, Fr. Marcel Algernon.
A Remarkable Episcopal Church Woman

It was a privilege to provide Ms. Joan Kline, past president of the Diocese of Southwest Florida Episcopal Church Women, an escort from the stage after she received the award as the diocese’s "Most Honored Woman."
One woman from each diocese of the Episcopal Church was recognized at the ECW Triennial Convention in Anaheim, Calif. (July 11, 2011)
A New Park and an Eccumenical Partnership

There was much joy as we blessed this shared park in Port Charlotte.
The congregations of St. James and the adjacent Methodist church collaborated to build this park after the destruction of Hurricane Charley changed the life and look of the area.
St. James House of Prayer
It was a pleasure to welcome Rev. Ernestein Flemister as rector of St. James House of Prayer in Tampa. This was a very special Thanksgiving. (Nov. 29, 2010)
A New Parish - St. Mary Magdelene
Over 600 of our diocesan community celebrated as St. Mary Magdelene became a parish at our 2010 Diocesan Convention. This was quite a moment to share together. (October 2010)
Praise Him With Song
Each year, I am present at our DaySpring Summer Camp; here a view from the Summer 2010 session where I led worship. (Click HERE to follow our camp blog at www.campdayspring.org.)
Faith in our Episcopal Schools
I joined Presiding Bishop Katherine on a tour of Berkeley Preparatory School and St. John's Episcopal School.
The Episcopal schools in our diocese are a strong and important piece of the fabric of diocesan life we share.
The Lambeth Conference

In my second year as Bishop I attended the decennial event in which bishops from around the globe, joined by ecumenical participants, gathered together for worship, study, conversation,
and discussion on the campus of the University of Kent at Canterbury, England.
At Canterbury Cathedral, I processed with the Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith for the opening eucharist. Years later, Bishop Smith was the guest of honor at our 2010 Diocesan Convention. In this colorful photo full of bishops from around the world, we all sang while we waited for the photographer to compile the shot. (July 2008)
