These books hold meaning for me for a couple reasons; first and foremost they are part of a series of writings of the church fathers, those who wrote on our faith in the first centuries after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The second reason they hold meaning for me is several were given to me by my wife each having a personal message from her written on the inside cover. The encouragements I receive from digging into these ancient writings along with the encouraging words of my wife bring me comfort in the discovery that I do not make my journey alone. I must admit that I consider it a great blessing and a privilege to have a stranger approach me in the hospital and ask me to come and anoint their loved one, or to be stopped by one of our food pantry clients and asked if I would pray with them. I also have many opportunities to engage in conversation with those who do not believe, or someone who has been wounded by the world and even some who unfortunately may have been wounded by the church. I am especially fond of the moments when the person God has placed in my path is willing to be vulnerable and share a bit of their story.
