Higher Education Ministry

University Ministries

Reaching out to college students is a key part of the mission work of The Diocese of Southwest Florida.

To that end, the Diocese supports campus-based ministries at the State College of Florida in Bradenton and the University of South Florida in Tampa. Individual parishes in the Diocese of Southwest Florida are providing direct leadership for each of these individual ministries.

St. Anselm's Chapel Center at USF

The St. Anselm Chapel Center at University of South Florida, dedicated on Nov. 17, 1962 by Bishop William F. Moses, ministers to students at the University of South Florida. It was the first religious center on the campus.

The Chapel Center is located on the USF campus in Tampa. Current programs include weekly evening prayer, fellowship nights, and other programs.

State College of Florida Chaplaincy, Bradenton

The Episcopal Chaplaincy at SCF was established on Oct. 24, 1970, when SCF was known as Manatee Community College.  Based in Building #4 (the Student Services Annex next to the Student Union Building), Campus Ministry provides young adult students the opportunity to either further their Christian faith beyond their church's youth group or to explore the Christian faith anew if they are seeking God in their own spiritual journey.  Always, Campus Ministry aims to provide care and resources for students and staff to integrate a living faith in Christ with their life.  Bible studies, counsel, prayer services, and volunteer service hours are among the programs offered.

Though supported and led by the Episcopal Church, Campus Ministry works in conjunction with other local ecumenical partners from area churches.  Often, free lunch giveaways for students are among the work other churches help provide.  Together, the worship of, service to, and study for Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is the privilege of Campus Ministry to offer at SCF.

The Episcopal Church

Our two campus ministries are part of a national network of Episcopal campus ministries. These ministries, often referred to as Canterbury Club or Episcopal Campus Ministry (ECM), include chaplains, campus ministers, lay leaders, and faculty. This network provides programming, networks (diocesan, provincial, churchwide, and ecumenical), advocacy, and resources for those doing ministry on college and university campuses. For more information on Episcopal campus ministries across the nation, see episcopalchurch.org.

Across Florida, there are other campus centers that minister to Episcopal students from Southwest Florida including the Episcopal Center for the Incarnation in Gainesville at the University of Florida and in Tallahassee at the Episcopal University Center at Florida A&M and Florida State.
