News of the week 5/29/2019

Paving update:  The new asphalt is being laid as I type this.  It looks lovely!  It should be ready for Sunday!  Just remember to drive and park carefully.  Never turn the wheel when the car is not moving if you’re sitting on new asphalt.  It will make a groove in the new surface.  Drive slowly and park carefully.  Thank you.

Summer schedule:  The early (8 a.m.) service will met last Sunday for the last time this spring.  It will resume in the fall, as will the Thursday Bible study and Holy Eucharist.

Coming celebration:  We will celebrate Pentecost Sunday June 9.  This festival remembers the coming of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the disciples in Jerusalem after Jesus’ ascension.  So it’s the birthday of the Church!  We wear red, a reminder that we all have the gift of that same Spirit.  Here at St. Wilfred we are also celebrate the ministry of Michael Trezise, who offered his gifts here at St. Wilfred for more than 12 years.

Episcopal 101  We will meet this Sunday June 2 in the back of Ricker Hall to do our next round of discussion of Episcopal ethos and theology. Its good conversation and a great way to answer questions you didn’t even know you had.

News from Fr. Roy Shepherd  Fr. Roy has completed and published a full volume of his spiritual reflections.  It is called Inspirations from Life and is available on Amazon.  However, Joe Hendricks is heading up a campaign to make it available here.  We can have a bulk order shipped directly to the church and the books will cost $20 each.  There are 250 individual reflections and is a real treasure.  All royalties from the sales will go to the Anglican Worship Resources Society.  See Joe to look at a copy and give him your order.

Day 4 Hope:  We need volunteers, to guide the families around, to help in the kitchen or at the various stations.

Please offer this prayer regularly:  A prayer for Day 4 Hope:

Gracious and life-giving God, we thank you for so many blessings.  Especially this day, we thank you for the program Hope for Communities, which enables us to reach out to homeless children and families.  Thank you for the vision which created this work, and for the energy and enthusiasm of our many volunteers.  We pray for the families who will be sent to us.  Bless those parents in their struggle to care for their children.  Bless the children and help them know that they are loved by many people.  Bring your Spirit and Wisdom to our work as we prepare for our event on Aug 4.  Help us spread your love in this hurting world.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Food Pantry  In June we will collect tooth brushes, toothpaste, and denture supplies.

Cash offering   In June we send our funds to Episcopal Relief and Development, which provides disaster relief and funds for sustainable development around the world.

In your prayers  Remember those who are sick or in any kind of trouble:  Tara Elizabeth, Irene and Michael, John, Jean, Sue, Beth, Miriam, Bobbie, Bill, Carol, Wilma, Carole, Dylan, Ben, and Michael,

Those serving in the armed forces:  Karrem, Aaron, Brenton, David, Cord, Greg, Eric, Austin, Caleb, and Dylan.

Long-term prayer list:  Maynard, Ina O’Reilly, Danielle, JoAnne & Bob, Vicki, Vicki C., Joan, Eddie, Michael, Barbara, Angela, Soleil, Cindy, Rosemary, Susan, Daniel, Bob, Janavia, Rusti, and Bogusia.

News of the week 5/20/2019

Paving update:  The old asphalt is torn up, and the new base is being built.  The noise and vibrations are rather amazing.  A couple of neighbors have complained, but there’s not much we can do!  It will be ok to park or walk on the base this weekend, but know that the base is not solid, and there are larger rocks in it.  It’s not a good walking surface, so wear old sturdy shoes and take your time.  We expect that work will knock off sometime tomorrow afternoon, and resume on Tuesday.  The campus will be very difficult to navigate the middle of next week.

Asphalt!  Next week is our repaving project.  If you come to the church Monday through Friday, be prepared to have to enter a different way.  You likely will have to drive and walk on the grass.  Say some prayers.  We need good weather all week, so the project will not overflow across a weekend and into the next week.

Thanks to the several folks who have added to our repairs fund.  We have contracted for the electrical repairs and the new signage.  Bids are in and a decision yet to be made on painting, which will likely have to be put off until August because of the electrical work that will happen on the back wall of the Ministry Center.  We’re going to get this done!  All help gratefully received!

Angels’ Attic  The Attic provides clothing, furniture and household goods to persons in need.  It has been active in Sarasota for more than 30 years.  They have recently written us saying that the level of need has gone up.  They would welcome volunteers to come down and help sort clothing and other donations.  They are grateful for cash donations.  We have agreed to accept some donations of household goods for them in the month of May.  We will receive the following items at the church during May:  pots/pans, silverware and usable clean towels.  Items may be dropped by the church office on Mon from 10 – 12 or Tues, Wed and Thurs between 10 – 2.  There is a shopping cart in the church narthex to receive these items. They will also accept clean clothing at their storefront, 1255 Seeds Ave. Sarasota.  For more information contact your clergy or call 941 735 8855.
