To the people of the Diocese of Western North Carolina

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

A few weeks ago, I was walking my little dog as I do every morning. At the beginning of the walk, I thought, “I feel pretty good. I don’t need to do anything about this.” By the time I was about halfway through, I was thinking, “Ok. Maybe I do need to do something.”

Just then I heard honking, and a beautiful formation of geese flew over. I’ve seen lots of geese formations, but I’ve never seen a “V” that perfect — straight lines and absolutely symmetrical. I paused and marveled at it. I thought of how astonishing it is that the earth started as a molten glob floating through space, pelted by asteroids, and now geese exist — honking over me on their long and amazing migration. I felt deeply blessed to be a part of such a wondrous creation as God has given us.

Thank you for your service to your parish and the Church during this busy time of the year. I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter and prepare for our Annual Convention.

Bp. José hopes that everyone will stay for the Saturday night program and Sunday morning business and worship. Last year’s program was a big hit, and we’re only making a few changes.
